The Laugenour Family and Their Legacy
The settlement of Laugenour was started by the Laugenour family. They came from South Carolina and chose this area in California to build their lives. The family continued to farm the land around Laugenour.
Building Wealth and Homes
Even though they farmed in Laugenour, the family built large, fancy homes called Victorian mansions. These beautiful houses were located in nearby towns like Woodland and Oroville. The land they owned in Laugenour helped the family become very wealthy. In fact, their wealth was ranked among the top ten richest families in California at one point. This put them just behind famous figures like Leland Stanford, who was the richest.
A Remarkable Swimmer: Hazel Bess Laugenour
One notable member of the Laugenour family was Hazel Bess Laugenour. She was a granddaughter of the family who founded the settlement. Hazel achieved something amazing in 1911. She became the very first woman to swim across the challenging waters of the Golden Gate. This was a huge accomplishment for her time!
