Laura Marx (born September 26, 1845 – died November 25, 1911) was an important activist for social change. She was the second daughter of the famous thinker Karl Marx and his wife, Jenny von Westphalen. In 1868, Laura married Paul Lafargue, who was also a revolutionary writer. They worked together for many years.
Laura Marx's Early Life
Laura Marx was born in Brussels, Belgium. Her family moved around a lot when she was young. They lived in France and then in a part of Germany called Prussia. Finally, in June 1849, her family settled down in London, England.
Working for Social Change
Laura met Paul Lafargue in London. Paul was a young French socialist. He came to London in 1866 to work with the First International. This was a group of workers from different countries who wanted to improve their lives. Paul became good friends with Karl Marx and got to know Laura. They fell in love.
Laura and Paul got married in April 1868. They had three children, but sadly, all of them died when they were very young. Laura and Paul spent many decades working together for their beliefs. They translated Karl Marx's writings into French. They also helped spread the ideas of Marxism in France and Spain. Marxism is a way of thinking about society and how it should be organized, focusing on fairness for workers.
For most of their lives, Laura and Paul received financial help from Friedrich Engels. He was a close friend and helper of Karl Marx. When Engels passed away in 1895, Laura and Paul inherited a lot of his money.
Laura and Paul passed away together in 1911. Laura was 66 years old and Paul was 69. A famous leader named Vladimir Lenin spoke at their funeral. He was a close friend and represented a Russian political party.
