History of Laurel Hill
Early Beginnings
The Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church was started in 1797. The church got its name from the laurel plants that grew all around the area. A community soon grew up near the church. After the American Revolutionary War, this community became a busy place for trade and business. Many of the first people to settle here were Scottish Highlanders.
Growth and Changes
A post office opened in Laurel Hill by 1822. Later, a railroad line called the Wilmington, Charlotte and Rutherford Railroad was built. A train station was set up south of the church. By 1861, most of the community had moved closer to this new train station. Factories that made turpentine and wooden tubs also started here.
Civil War and Local Businesses
During the American Civil War, in 1865, soldiers led by William Tecumseh Sherman camped near the church. This happened during the Carolinas campaign. In the 1870s, a man named John F. McNair opened a general store in Laurel Hill. Later, in 1900, Z.V. Pate bought McNair's store. He turned it into a very large furniture business that served the whole region.
Modern Times
Since 2004, Laurel Hill has hosted a yearly event called LaurelFest. This festival brings the community together. In 2020, the old community center was taken down. The Scotland County Commission then approved building a new one the next year.
