During World War I, Laurence Calvert was a sergeant. He was 26 years old at the time. His unit was the 5th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. On September 12, 1918, a very brave act happened. It was during the Battle of Havrincourt in France. This act earned him the Victoria Cross.
A Heroic Act of Bravery
Sergeant Calvert showed incredible courage. His unit was attacking the enemy. But heavy machine-gun fire made success seem impossible. The enemy guns were firing from the side. This is called "enfilade" fire. It made the situation very dangerous.
Sergeant Calvert acted alone. He rushed forward towards the enemy machine-gun team. He used his bayonet against three enemy soldiers. He also shot four others. He captured two machine guns by himself. He defeated all the soldiers operating them.
His amazing bravery helped his unit. It allowed them to reach their goal. His actions inspired everyone around him.
