Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Laurence Oliphant (born around 1438, died 1498) was an important Scottish nobleman, also known as a peer. He was the very first person to hold the title of Lord Oliphant.

Becoming a Scottish Lord

Laurence Oliphant was given the title of Lord Oliphant in July 1455. This happened just one month after he reached the age of adulthood, which was an important step for young nobles in those times.

His Early Years

Laurence Oliphant was the oldest son of Sir John Oliphant of Aberdalgie and Isobel Ogilvie. Isobel's father was Sir Walter Ogilvie, who was the Hereditary Sheriff of Angus.

Laurence was born around 1438. When he was only seven or eight years old, in January 1445, his father was killed in a conflict. This conflict was between his mother's family, the Ogilvies, and another powerful family called the Lindsays.

Laurence had two brothers, James and John, and three sisters: Christian, Elizabeth, and Margaret. In 1450, King James II placed young Laurence under the care of Sir David Hay of Yester. This meant Sir David became his guardian.

Family Life

Laurence Oliphant married Elizabeth Hay. She was the daughter of William Hay, 1st Earl of Erroll. Laurence and Elizabeth had children, including their son, John Oliphant, 2nd Lord Oliphant, who later became the second Lord Oliphant.
