John Oliphant, 2nd Lord Oliphant facts for kids
John Oliphant, 2nd Lord Oliphant (died 1516) was an important Scottish landowner. He was the oldest son of Laurence Oliphant, 1st Lord Oliphant and Elizabeth Hay. His mother was the daughter of William Hay, 1st Earl of Erroll.
Sometimes, he is also known as the 5th Lord Oliphant, Aberdalgie and Dupplin. He lived during a time when powerful families played a big role in Scotland.
Life at Court
John Oliphant had connections with the Scottish royal family. In August 1503, he sent a gift of plums to King James IV. This was around the time the king was marrying Margaret Tudor. Oliphant or his father had also sent plums to the king in August 1497.
The king valued Oliphant's presence. In February 1507, King James IV invited him to the baptism of his son at Holyrood Palace. The next month, in March, Oliphant was asked to spend Easter at the royal court at Holyrood.
Settling Disputes
In September 1507, King James IV helped John Oliphant resolve some disagreements. The king gave him a special letter that helped settle disputes with Lord Drummond and Earl of Buchan. These disagreements involved Oliphant's actions in places like Drymen and Balloch.
Family Life
John Oliphant married Elizabeth Campbell. She was the daughter of Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll. Together, they had several children.
Their children included:
- John Oliphant, who was known as the Master of Oliphant.
- Colin Oliphant, who was also a Master of Oliphant. Sadly, he died in the Battle of Flodden. Colin had married Elizabeth Keith, whose father was William Keith, the 2nd Earl Marischal. Colin and Elizabeth had children, including Laurence Oliphant, 3rd Lord Oliphant.
