Laurence Oliphant, 3rd Lord Oliphant facts for kids
Laurence Oliphant, the 3rd Lord Oliphant, was an important Scottish nobleman who lived a long time ago. He was a powerful leader in Scotland during the 1500s.
Life of Laurence Oliphant
Laurence Oliphant was the son of Colin, Master of Oliphant. His father sadly died in a big battle called the battle of Flodden in 1513. His mother was Lady Elizabeth Keith.
Laurence became Lord Oliphant in 1516. He took over this important role from his grandfather, John Oliphant, 2nd Lord Oliphant.
In 1542, he was captured during another battle, the battle of Solway Moss. He was taken as a prisoner to England. At that time, his lands in Scotland were worth a lot of money. They were valued at about two thousand merks Scots each year.
Lord Oliphant stayed in England for a while. In 1543, he was allowed to go free. This was possible after he paid a ransom of eight hundred merks sterling.
However, there was a condition for his release. He had to promise to help King Henry VIII of England become the ruler of Scotland. He also had to try and get the young Scottish queen, Queen Mary, sent to England. The idea was for her to be raised there.
Once he was back in Scotland, Laurence Oliphant did not keep these promises. Later, in 1560, he seemed to support the Protestant religion. However, he probably never truly went against Queen Mary.
Laurence Oliphant passed away on March 26, 1566.
