Laurent Menager (born 1835, died 1902) was a famous composer from Luxembourg. Many people call him Luxembourg's national composer. He was also a choirmaster, organist, and conductor. A choirmaster leads a choir, an organist plays the organ, and a conductor leads an orchestra.

Laurent Menager started a big singing group called Sang a Klang in 1857. He wrote many different kinds of music. This included songs, music for orchestras, and even short operas called operettas. He also wrote music for brass bands and plays for the theatre.

Early Life and Education

Laurent Menager was born on January 10, 1835. His father was a baker. He was born in a part of Luxembourg City called Pfaffenthal.

He went to school at the Athénée de Luxembourg in Luxembourg. After that, he studied music in Cologne, Germany. He learned from a famous teacher named Professor Hiller at the Academy of Music.

His Musical Career

Laurent Menager worked for the city of Luxembourg for 46 years. He was a professor at the Luxembourg Music School. He also taught music and singing at the Athenée and at a school for future teachers.

He led several singing groups. He was friends with two famous poets, Dicks and Lentz. They worked together on many songs.

What Music Did He Write?

Laurent Menager wrote many types of music. He composed pieces for choirs, symphonies for orchestras, and operettas. He also wrote music for small groups of instruments (chamber music) and for military bands.

His church music was very special. Two of his most famous pieces are Pie Jesu and Ihr lieben Vöglein.

His Legacy

Laurent Menager passed away on February 7, 1902. He was so well-liked that the whole country was sad. More than 6,000 people came to his funeral. This included people from 45 different groups and societies.
