Laurie Louise Smith Camp (born November 28, 1953 – died September 23, 2020) was an important federal judge in the United States District Court for the District of Nebraska. She spent many years working in the legal system. She was known for her dedication to justice.

Early Life and Education

Laurie Smith Camp was born in Omaha, Nebraska. She was a very good student. In 1974, she earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Stanford University. Later, in 1977, she went on to study law. She received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Law. This degree is needed to become a lawyer.

Her Legal Career

After finishing law school, Laurie Smith Camp began her career in 1977. She worked for a bank for a short time. From 1978 to 1980, she worked as a private lawyer. This means she helped different people with their legal problems.

In 1980, she started working for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. This department manages prisons and jails. She was their main lawyer, called the General Counsel, until 1991.

Later, she joined the Nebraska Department of Justice. From 1991 to 1995, she led the civil rights section. This part of the department works to protect people's rights. From 1995 until 2001, she was a Chief Deputy Attorney General. In this role, she handled important criminal cases for the state.

Becoming a Federal Judge

In 2001, Laurie Smith Camp was chosen to become a federal judge. President George W. Bush nominated her for a position in the United States District Court for the District of Nebraska. The Senate approved her nomination on October 23, 2001. She officially became a judge the very next day.

She served as a judge for many years. From December 1, 2011, to November 1, 2018, she held the important role of Chief Judge. This means she was the main judge in her court. On December 1, 2018, she became a Senior Judge. This is a special role for experienced judges who can choose to work a reduced caseload. Her time as a judge ended on September 23, 2020, when she passed away in Omaha.
