Lavinia Bazhbeuk-Melikyan (Armenian: Լավինիա Բաժբեուկ-Մելիքյան) was a talented Soviet-Armenian painter. She was born on April 3, 1922, and passed away on November 8, 2005. Lavinia became a full member of the Russian Academy of Arts. She was also known as a People's Artist of the Armenian SSR, which is a special award for artists.

Her Early Life and Education

Lavinia Bazhbeuk-Melikyan was born in 1922 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Her father, Alexander Bazhbeuk-Melikyan, was also a famous artist. He was a painter, graphic designer, and sculptor.

In 1935, Lavinia moved to Yerevan, Armenia. There, she studied art at the Yerevan State College of Fine Arts. This college is named after Panos Terlemezyan, another important artist.

She continued her art studies in Moscow. In 1951, she graduated from the Moscow State Academic Art Institute. This institute is named after V.N. Surikov. While studying, she even helped create beautiful inlaid panels. These panels were for the Moscow “Komsomolskaya” metro station. She worked in the studios of Pavel Korin, a well-known artist.

Showing Her Art to the World

Lavinia Bazhbeuk-Melikyan started showing her art in 1951. She regularly took part in art shows in Armenia and across the Soviet Union. She also showed her paintings at international exhibitions.

Lavinia Bazhbeuk-Melikyan received many awards for her artistic talent. These awards showed how much her work was valued.

  • 1967 – She was named an Honored Artist of Armenia. This award recognizes great contributions to art.
  • 1970 – She won a Gold Medal at a big exhibition in Moscow. This was the USSR exhibition of economic achievements (VDNKH).
  • 1974 – She received a special Diploma from the USSR Artists’ Union. This was for her amazing series of portraits.
  • 1983 – She was given the title of People’s Artist of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. This is one of the highest honors for artists.
  • 1997 – She became an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.

From 1988, she was a corresponding member of the Art Academy of Russia. In 2002, she became a full member of the Russian Academy of Arts. This means she was recognized as one of the most important artists.
