Exploring Downtown Lawrence's History
This historic district helps us understand the past of Lawrence. It shows how the city grew and changed over time. Many of the buildings here are from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Where is it?
The district is mostly found along Massachusetts Street. This street runs between 6th Street and South Park Street in downtown Lawrence. It covers about 48 acres, which is like 36 football fields!
What Buildings Are There?
Most of the buildings in the district are commercial buildings. This means they were used for businesses like shops or offices. They are usually made of brick or stone. You'll often see big display windows on the first floor. Smaller windows are on the upper floors.
Four buildings in this district are extra special. They are listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are very important on their own. These buildings are:
- The Old Lawrence City Hall
- The old Douglas County Courthouse
- The Eldridge House Hotel
- The US Post Office-Lawrence
In total, the district has 136 important spots. About 99 of these are considered to be truly historic. They help tell the story of the area.

The Lawrence's Downtown Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 15, 2004. This listing helps to protect the district's history and unique look.
