Lawrence is a small, unincorporated community in Kaufman County, Texas. This means it is a settled area that does not have its own local government. It is part of the larger Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex region. In 2000, about 279 people lived in Lawrence.
History of Lawrence
The area where Lawrence is located was first settled in the early 1840s. In 1872, the Texas and Pacific Railway built train tracks through the community. A post office opened in Lawrence in 1874 and stayed open until the 1930s.
By the early 1880s, Lawrence had grown quite a bit. It had three stores, a church, and a hotel. About 200 people lived there. Farmers would bring their crops, like corn, to Lawrence. They used the corn and gristmills to process their grains. The railroad also provided special cars for shipping grain.
The number of people living in Lawrence changed over time. In 1904, the population was 176. It then dropped to 75 people between 1925 and the 1930s. After World War II, the population went down even more, to just 40 people. However, Lawrence started to grow again in the 1970s. By 1974, more than 100 people lived there. In 1988, the official population was 113. Two years later, it increased to 231, and by 2000, it reached 279 residents.
Geography of Lawrence
Lawrence is located in the northwestern part of Kaufman County. It sits on a special side track of a main railroad line, which is off Farm to Market Road 1392. It is about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Terrell.
Climate
The weather in Lawrence has hot and humid summers. The winters are usually mild to cool. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Lawrence has a humid subtropical climate. This type of climate is often shown as "Cfa" on climate maps.
Education in Lawrence
Lawrence had its own school back in the 1880s. Today, students in Lawrence attend schools that are part of the Kaufman Independent School District.
