The Story of the Newspaper
The Journal-World newspaper got its current name in 1911. However, the newspaper's history goes back much further, to 1858.
How It All Started
In 1891, a man named Wilford Collins Simons came to Lawrence. He took over a newspaper called the Lawrence Record. Then, on March 2, 1892, Simons started his own newspaper, the Lawrence World.
Joining Forces
A few years later, in 1905, the Lawrence World bought another local paper, the Lawrence Journal. These two papers officially joined together in 1911. This happened after a fire destroyed the Journal's offices. That's when the name Lawrence Journal-World was created.
The Lawrence Journal itself had a long history. It was once called the Lawrence Daily Journal (starting in 1880). Before that, it was known as the Republican Daily Journal (from at least 1869). This newspaper was formed by combining even older newspapers from Lawrence, with one dating back to 1858. This is why the Journal-World says its history began in 1858.
A Long-Serving Editor
Wilford Collins Simons, who started the Lawrence World, was the editor for a very long time. He led the newspaper from 1891 until he passed away in 1952.
Changes Over Time
In 2010, the company that owned the Lawrence Journal-World, called the World Company, sold some of its other news businesses. They sold them to a company named Knology, which provides internet and cable services.
More recently, on May 1, 2019, the Journal-World's offices moved. They left their old building, which was a historic post office, and moved to a new office in North Lawrence. Another company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas, moved into the old building.
