Lazzaro Tavarone (1556–1641) was a talented Italian painter. He lived during a time called the late-Renaissance and Mannerist period. He worked mostly in his hometown of Genoa, Italy, and also in Spain.
Early Life and Training
Lazzaro Tavarone was born in 1556. He learned how to paint from a famous artist named Luca Cambiasi. Learning from a master was a common way for young artists to start their careers back then.
Painting in Spain
In 1583, Lazzaro Tavarone traveled to Spain with his teacher, Luca Cambiasi. They helped decorate a very important building called the Escorial for the Spanish King. One of the paintings he helped create was a large, action-packed scene of the Battle of La Higueruela.
Return to Genoa
Lazzaro Tavarone returned to Genoa in 1594. He became very well-known there. He was skilled at painting both portraits of people and scenes from history.
He painted a work called Martyrdom of San Lorenzo in the Genoa Cathedral. He also created large wall paintings, known as frescoes, in important buildings called the Palazzos Saluzzi and Adorni. He painted frescoes about the Life of Sant’Ambrogio for the Oratorio di Sant'Ambrogio. He also painted scenes from the life of Christopher Columbus.
