LeUyen Pham (born September 6, 1973) is a super talented artist who writes and draws amazing books for kids! She has worked on over 120 books, bringing stories to life with her pictures. In 2020, she even won a special award called the Caldecott Honor for her beautiful drawings in the book Bear Came Along.

About LeUyen Pham
LeUyen Pham was born in Saigon, Vietnam on September 7, 1973. She went to the University of California, Los Angeles for a couple of years. Then, she graduated from the Art Center College of Design in 1996 with a degree in art.
After college, Pham worked at Dreamworks Animation from 1996 to 1999. She helped create the layouts for animated movies. But she loved children's books so much that she decided to leave Dreamworks. She wanted to focus on illustrating books full-time.
Her First Books and Awards
Pham's first book as an illustrator was Sugarcane House, and Other Stories about Mr. Fat. It came out in 1997. In 2000, she illustrated Can You Do This, Old Badger?. This book won an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award!
Another book she illustrated, Twenty-One Elephants, also won an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award in 2004. These awards show how much people loved her artwork.
Becoming an Author
In 2005, LeUyen Pham wrote her very first book, Big Sister, Little Sister. This story is told by a younger girl. She talks about how she is different from her older sister. As the story goes on, you can see their strong sisterly love. The book has cool ink brush drawings with digital colors added. People really liked it! One reviewer said it showed "the ups and downs of sisterly love" perfectly.
Popular Book Series
LeUyen Pham is well-known for illustrating the Princess in Black series. These books are written by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale. The first book came out in 2014. Critics have said that Pham's drawings in the series are full of "energy and wit." Her pictures are lively and fun, just like cartoons!
Pham also worked with Shannon Hale to create two graphic novels: Real Friends and Best Friends. These books tell stories about friendship and growing up.
Recent Works and Recognition
In 2020, LeUyen Pham won the amazing Caldecott Honor award. She received it for her illustrations in the book Bear Came Along. This is a very important award in children's literature!
During the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, Pham, Shannon Hale, and Dean Hale released a special free ebook. It was called The Princess in Black and the Case of the Coronavirus. It helped explain tips for fighting COVID-19 in a way that kids could understand.
Pham also illustrated another book with Shannon Hale called Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn. It was published in 2021. Her collaborations with Shannon Hale have earned her several nominations for the AML Awards. She even won one for Real Friends!
Personal Life
LeUyen Pham is married to another artist, Alexandre Puvilland. They got married on October 29, 2005.
