Le Sanctuaire du Mont-Royal, also known simply as Le Sanctuaire, is a big group of buildings in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is located in the Côte-des-Neiges area, close to the Outremont neighborhood. This complex includes homes, shops, sports facilities, and medical offices.

The entire project has seven main buildings. Together, they offer 925 places for people to live. Construction of Le Sanctuaire began in 1981 and was finished in 1990. It was built by a company called Groupe Lépine, led by René Lépine Sr.. Many people see Le Sanctuaire as a famous modern building in Montreal.

What is Le Sanctuaire?

Le Sanctuaire is a "multi-phase complex." This means it was built in several stages, with different buildings completed over time. It serves many purposes:

  • Condominiums: These are apartments that people own, rather than rent.
  • Commercial spaces: These are areas for businesses, like shops or offices.
  • Athletic facilities: These are places for sports and exercise, such as gyms or courts.
  • Medical offices: These are spaces where doctors and other healthcare professionals work.

This mix of uses makes Le Sanctuaire a busy and important part of the community.

A Big Project

The buildings at Le Sanctuaire are very large. In total, they cover an area of 139,355 square meters. That's more than 1.5 million square feet! The outside walls of the buildings are made from strong, reinforced concrete. This material helps make the buildings sturdy and long-lasting.

The tallest building in the complex is 71.25 meters (about 234 feet) high. This building is part of Phase VI of the project. The entire complex has 16 floors in its tallest sections.

Who Built It?

The idea for Le Sanctuaire came from René Lépine Sr.. He was a well-known developer in Montreal. His company, Groupe Lépine, was in charge of building this large project. The total cost of building Le Sanctuaire was $241 million in 1989. This shows how big and important the project was for the city.
