Leander (also spelled Leandre) is a small, unincorporated community located in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger parish, which is similar to a county in other states. The people here use the ZIP code 71438.
Leander is a quiet area. It was not included in the official population count (census) taken in 2010. This means its exact population numbers are not recorded in the national census data.
The 1953 Tornado
On December 3, 1953, a powerful tornado passed near Leander. It moved across the northwest side of the community. This storm caused a lot of damage to homes and buildings.
Four houses were hit especially hard. They suffered what is called F4-level damage. This means they were almost completely destroyed. Sadly, seven people lost their lives because of the tornado. Another 20 people were injured during the storm.
