The Leaside Towers are two very tall apartment buildings in East York, a part of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They are the tallest buildings in East York! These towers have a special design style called "Brutalist." One tower faces north-south, and the other faces east-west. You can find them at 85 and 95 Thorncliffe Park Drive.
These towers are super tall, reaching about 129 meters (423 feet) high. Both towers have 43 floors. When they were finished in 1970, they were among the tallest apartment buildings in Canada. The towers are located next to E.T. Seton Park. This means people living there get amazing views of Toronto's skyline and the Don Valley.
How the Towers Stay Comfy
Every apartment in the Leaside Towers has central air conditioning and heating. This means residents can stay cool in summer and warm in winter.
Keeping Cool in Summer
In warmer months, a special liquid (water mixed with glycol) is made very cold, about 4 degrees Celsius. This cold liquid then travels through pipes all over the building. Each apartment has a fan unit that uses this cold liquid to blow cool air into the rooms.
Big machines in the basement make the liquid cold. These machines use water from the city to help cool down. The heat from this process goes into the air using large cooling towers outside.
Staying Warm in Winter
When it gets cold, a boiler heats up the same liquid mixture. This hot liquid also travels through pipes to every apartment. The fan units then use the hot liquid to blow warm air into the rooms. The boiler uses natural gas to create the heat.
To help keep the temperature inside steady, the main entrances have special revolving doors. These doors create an "air-lock." This helps stop too much cold air from rushing in during winter or hot air in summer.
