The community of Leatherwood got its start with a post office. This post office opened in 1880. It helped people send and receive mail in the area. However, the post office didn't stay open for very long. It closed down in 1894, just 14 years after it began. The name "Leatherwood" comes from a nearby stream called Leatherwood Branch creek.
