Acting Career
Starring on Roseanne
When Lecy Goranson was young, she studied acting in Chicago. She got the part of Becky Conner on Roseanne after her second audition ever. She played the smart and sometimes rebellious oldest daughter of the Conner family.
After five seasons, Goranson decided to go to college. She left the show in 1992 to attend the well-known Vassar College. Because of her school schedule, she could only appear in a few episodes. To explain her absence, the show's writers had her character, Becky, elope with her boyfriend, Mark.
Two Actresses, One Role
The show's producers wanted Becky to be in more episodes, but Goranson was busy with her studies. So, they hired another actress, Sarah Chalke, to play Becky. Chalke played the role for two full seasons.
Things got interesting in the eighth season. Goranson was able to act on the show again while still in college. She returned as Becky, replacing Chalke. However, she sometimes had to miss filming for school. During those times, Chalke would step in to play Becky again.
This switching became a running joke on the show. Characters would make funny comments about Becky's changing appearance. In one episode, they even made a joke about how Becky "isn't the same" from week to week. Another episode ended with both Goranson and Chalke on screen together, poking fun at the situation.
For the show's ninth season, Goranson decided to focus on school. Chalke returned to play Becky full-time for that season.
Life After Roseanne
After Roseanne first ended, Goranson continued her acting career. She took on smaller roles in movies and made guest appearances on TV shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Fringe. In her movies, she was often credited by her birth name, Alicia Goranson.
Returning to the Conner Family
In 2017, it was announced that Roseanne would return with the original cast. Goranson came back to her famous role as Becky. Sarah Chalke also appeared in the new season, but as a different character. The new season of Roseanne started in March 2018.
However, the show was canceled after one season due to controversial comments made by its star, Roseanne Barr.
Soon after, a new show called The Conners was created. It continued the story of the Conner family without Roseanne Barr. Goranson and the rest of the cast returned for this spin-off, which began in October 2018. Goranson even wrote an episode for the show about an important social topic. The show was a success and continued for seven seasons.
