The Earthen Dam at Ledson Marsh

Ledson Marsh was created by a long earthen dam. This dam is about 300 feet (91 meters) long. A former landowner built it in 1930.

The dam is about 6 feet (1.8 meters) high. It is also about 4 feet (1.2 meters) wide at the top. Over many years, the dam started to wear out.

Water began to leak through it. This caused the marsh to dry out in the autumn. It would then fill up again during the winter rains. Small holes made by rodents caused some of the damage. Tree stumps left from cut-down eucalyptus trees also hurt the dam.

Why the Dam Needed Repair

People became worried about the dam's safety. If the dam broke completely, it would harm the marsh habitat. It could also fill nearby creeks with mud and dirt.

The California Department of Parks and Recreation fixed the dam. They made sure the marsh would still dry out each year. This was important for the animals living there.

California Red-legged Frogs

Because the marsh dries out each year, it became home to California Red-legged Frogs. These frogs are a special type of animal. They are listed as a threatened species by both federal and state governments. This means their numbers are low, and they need protection.

Government groups were concerned about the frogs. If the marsh stayed wet all year, other frogs called bullfrogs might move in. Bullfrogs are bigger and could take over the marsh. They might push out the smaller red-legged frogs. Keeping the marsh's natural wet and dry cycle helps protect these special frogs.
