Bennett Mountain, also known as Bennett Peak, is a mountain in the Sonoma Mountains of California. It stands about 1,909-foot (582 m) tall. The mountain is located on the western edge of Annadel State Park. It helps separate two important valleys: Bennett Valley and Sonoma Valley.
Bennett Valley got its name from James N. Bennett. He was an early settler from Illinois who moved to the area in the 1800s.
In 2017, the mountain was affected by large wildfires that spread across Northern California.
Growing Grapes on Bennett Mountain
People started planting grapes on Bennett Mountain a long time ago. As early as 1862, a man named Isaac DeTurk planted 30 acres (12 ha) of grapes on the western side of the mountain.
By 1878, he was making a lot of wine. He produced about 100,000 US gallons (380,000 L) of wine each year. This wine came from his own grapes and grapes he bought from others. His winery was located near Grange and Bennett Valley roads.
Since 2003, the top of Bennett Mountain has been part of the Bennett Valley AVA. An AVA stands for American Viticultural Area. It is a special region recognized for growing grapes and making wine.
