Bulbine semibarbata, often called the leek lily, native leek, or wild onion, is a type of plant that grows in Australia. It is an annual herb, which means it grows, flowers, and dies within one year.
What Does the Leek Lily Look Like?
This plant is a small herb. It usually grows to be between 7 and 45 centimeters tall. That's about the height of a school ruler, or a little bit taller! When it blooms, you will see bright yellow flowers.
How Scientists Named This Plant
Scientists give every plant and animal a special name. This helps everyone around the world know exactly which living thing they are studying. The Bulbine semibarbata was first described by a botanist named Robert Brown. He wrote about it in 1810. At first, he gave it the name Anthericum semibarbatum. About eleven years later, another scientist named Adrian Hardy Haworth moved it to the Bulbine group of plants.
Where Does the Leek Lily Grow?
The leek lily is found all over Australia. You can find it in every state and also in the Northern Territory. It likes to grow in certain types of soil, like white or grey sand, sandy clay, or loam. This plant especially likes places that get wet during the winter months. You might see it near granite rocks, along small creeks, at the edges of salt lakes, or even close to the coast.
