Legend, Alberta facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Legend is a small, quiet place in Alberta, Canada. It's not an official town or city, but it's part of the County of Forty Mile No. 8. You can find Legend in the southeast part of Alberta, right along Highway 61.

What is Legend?

Legend is located between Range Road 125 and Range Road 130. It's a place where most people have moved away. This makes it one of many "ghost towns" you can find in Alberta. Legend sits along a very old and important path called the Red Coat Trail.

A Look at Ghost Towns

A ghost town is a place that was once busy and full of life. Over time, people moved away, often because jobs disappeared. This leaves behind empty buildings and quiet streets. Legend became a ghost town when its main purpose, storing grain, was no longer needed.

The Role of Grain Elevators

Long ago, Legend was an important spot for farmers. It had two big buildings called grain elevators. Farmers would bring their crops, like wheat, to these elevators. The elevators would store the grain safely until it was ready to be shipped.

Both of Legend's original grain elevators were taken down in the late 1990s. Today, only one smaller part of a United Grain Growers elevator remains. You can still see this part on a farm located south of Nemiscam. It stands as a reminder of Legend's past.
