The island is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south-east of a place called Cape Melville in Queensland. It's a beautiful spot that helps protect many different plants and animals.

What is Leggatt Island?

Leggatt Island is a type of island called a vegetated sand cay. This means it's a small, low island made mostly of sand. Over time, plants have grown on it, making it green and full of life. It sits about 15 kilometers (9 miles) away from the main coast.

Island Plants

The island has many well-grown plants. You can find tall coconut palms there, which are a common sight on tropical islands. There is also a plant called sisal. These plants are important because they create a safe home, or habitat, for many animals.

Island Animals

Leggatt Island is a busy place for wildlife. Many different kinds of roosting birds use the island as a place to rest and sleep. It's also a very important spot for sea turtles. Both green turtles and hawksbill turtles visit Leggatt Island. These turtles often come to the island to lay their eggs in the sand.
