Legislative Yuan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Legislative Yuan is like the main law-making body or parliament of the Republic of China. It's located in Taiwan. Think of it as one of the five important parts of the government that work together to run the country. It's a "unicameral" legislature, which means it has just one main group of lawmakers.

How Lawmakers Are Chosen

The people who work in the Legislative Yuan are called "legislators." They are chosen by voters in different ways to make sure everyone's voice is heard. Here's how they get their seats:

Voting for Local Representatives

  • 73 legislators are chosen using a system called "first-past-the-post." This means that in different areas, the person who gets the most votes wins, even if they don't get more than half of all votes. It's similar to a race where the first one to cross the finish line wins.

Voting for Political Parties

  • 34 legislators are chosen based on how many votes political parties get across the whole country. If a party gets at least 5% of the total votes, they can send members to the Legislative Yuan. This system helps make sure smaller parties also have a voice.
  • An important rule for these seats is that at least half of the legislators chosen this way for each party must be women. This helps ensure fairness and representation.

Voting for Indigenous Peoples

  • 6 seats are set aside specifically for representatives of Taiwan's indigenous peoples. These legislators are elected by indigenous voters. This ensures that the unique needs and voices of these communities are heard in the government.
