Lei Tingjie (Chinese: 雷挺婕; pinyin: Léi Tǐngjié, born on March 3, 1997) is a talented Chinese chess player. She holds the highest title in chess, known as Grandmaster.
Lei Tingjie has won many important chess tournaments. She was the champion of the 2021 Women's Grand Swiss. She also won the Chinese women's national championship in 2017. In 2023, she became the winner of the Women's Candidates Tournament.
She earned her Grandmaster title in 2017 when she was 19 years old. This made her one of the youngest women to achieve this high honor.

Lei Tingjie's Chess Journey
Early Successes (2014-2015)
Lei Tingjie started showing her chess skills early on. In 2014, she won the 4th China Women Masters Tournament. She tied for first place with another strong player, Ju Wenjun. Because of her excellent play, FIDE, the world chess organization, gave her the title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM).
In 2015, Lei won the women's section of the Moscow Open tournament. She finished ahead of Aleksandra Goryachkina, who was a World Junior Girls Champion. Lei also played in the Women's World Chess Championship 2015 that year. She reached the second round before being knocked out. Later in 2015, she tied for first place in the 32nd Böblingen International Open.
Becoming a Grandmaster (2016-2017)
In 2016, Lei Tingjie was part of the Chinese team that won a gold medal. This was at the women's event of the Asian Nations Cup in Dubai. Her hard work paid off when she was awarded the full Grandmaster title in March 2017. This is a very difficult title to achieve in chess.
In June 2017, Lei won the 6th Chinese Women's Masters Tournament. She even finished ahead of the Women's World Champion at the time, Tan Zhongyi. In December, she earned a silver medal at the Women's World Rapid Chess Championship. This tournament is for fast-paced chess games.
Major Wins and World Championship Challenge (2018-2023)
In January 2018, Lei Tingjie won the 43rd Sevilla International Chess Open. This was a big achievement because it's one of the largest open tournaments ever won by a female player.
Her biggest win came in 2021 when she won the FIDE Women's Grand Swiss Tournament 2021. This victory was very important. It meant she earned a spot in the Women's Candidates Tournament 2022–23.
In April 2023, Lei won the Women's Candidates Tournament. She beat Tan Zhongyi in a match, winning by a score of 3½ to 1½. Winning the Candidates Tournament meant she got to challenge the reigning Women's World Champion, Ju Wenjun. The match for the world title happened in July 2023. Lei played very well but eventually lost the match to Ju Wenjun in the 12th game.

Lei Tingjie studied at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. She is married to another Grandmaster, Raymond Song, who is from Taiwan.
