He won the Australian Under-16 championship in 1986 when he was 15. After that, he moved up to senior racing in 1987.

Leigh won his first of four Australian Under-21 Championships in 1988. He continued to win this title in 1990, 1991, and 1992.

He won the Australian Solo Championship a record ten times! His wins were in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2009. His first win was in Adelaide, and his tenth and last win was also in Adelaide. He won all 15 races in his final championship!

Leigh also won the Victorian State Championship six times. He won in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1995. In his early career, he and his mentor Phil Crump were known as "The Master and the Apprentice."

In 1992, Leigh was the Australian Under-21 and Senior Champion. He then won the Under-21 World Championship in Germany. This made him Australia's first Under-21 World Champion since 1983.
