Leilah Weinraub (born 1979) is an American filmmaker and artist. She was also the chief executive officer (CEO) of the fashion brand Hood By Air. In 2018, she was recognized as a Sundance Institute Art of Nonfiction Fellow for her work in documentary filmmaking.
About Leilah Weinraub
Leilah Weinraub was born in Los Angeles, California. Her mother was a textile designer from Compton, and her father was a doctor from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
She spent one year at an agricultural high school in Israel. After that, she returned to the United States. She later attended Antioch College and studied film at Bard College.
Her Career
In 1998, Leilah Weinraub met director Tony Kaye while working at a store in Los Angeles. She helped him with his film project Lake of Fire. In return, he helped pay for her college tuition at Antioch.
The Film Shakedown
Leilah Weinraub spent six years filming for her documentary Shakedown. She gathered over 400 hours of video footage for this project.
The finished film, Shakedown, was first shown at the 2018 Berlinale film festival. It has also been shown at many art places and film festivals. These include the Tate in London, MoMA PS1 in New York, and the True/False Film Festival in Missouri. A shorter version of the film was also shown at the 2017 Whitney Biennial.
Hood by Air Fashion
In 2012, Weinraub started working with the fashion brand Hood By Air. This brand was very popular and well-known. She eventually became the chief executive officer (CEO) of the company.
She stayed in this role until the brand took a break in 2017. Leilah Weinraub was careful about how the brand worked. She preferred to keep the company private and did not want outside investors to get involved.
