History of the Gewandhaus Buildings
Leipzig has had three different concert halls named Gewandhaus. Each one played an important part in the city's music history.
The First Gewandhaus (1781)
The very first Gewandhaus was built in 1781. It was designed by an architect named Johann Carl Friedrich Dauthe. This building was originally a place where cloth was traded. It was later changed into a concert hall.
The Second Gewandhaus (1884)
A new, much larger Gewandhaus opened in 1884. This building was very grand and beautiful. Sadly, it was badly damaged during the World War II bombings. These bombings happened between 1943 and 1944. The building could not be saved after the war.
The Current Gewandhaus (1981)
The Gewandhaus you see today is the third building with this name. It was opened on October 8, 1981. This modern concert hall is famous for its excellent acoustics. This means the sound quality inside is incredibly clear and rich.
