The Story of the Lemon Tree
Marge tries to teach Bart about being proud of his town, Springfield. Bart soon starts to love his town. But then, kids from the nearby town of Shelbyville start making fun of Springfield.
Grampa explains that Springfield and Shelbyville have always been rivals. This rivalry started when the towns were founded. Jebediah Springfield, who founded Springfield, wanted a town focused on good behavior. But Shelbyville Manhattan, who founded Shelbyville, had different ideas.
The next day, something terrible happens! A group of boys from Shelbyville steal Springfield's famous lemon tree. Bart decides he must get it back. He gathers his friends: Milhouse, Nelson, Martin, Todd, and Database. They all head to Shelbyville to find their tree.
The boys find the lemon tree in a special lot where the leader of the Shelbyville gang lives. Meanwhile, Homer takes the boys' fathers in Ned Flanders' RV to find their sons in Shelbyville. The fathers and sons demand their tree back, but the lot owner refuses to give it up.
A Clever Plan to Get the Tree Back
Bart comes up with a smart plan, like the old Trojan Horse story. They park the RV outside a hospital, knowing it will be taken to the impound lot. When it gets dark, the Springfield men and boys sneak out of the RV. They tie the big lemon tree to the top of the RV.
The lot owner catches them, but they manage to escape! They drive the RV and the lemon tree back to Springfield.
After this big adventure, the older people in both towns tell their own versions of the story. In Springfield, Grampa praises the "heroes of Springfield" for bringing the tree home. Bart and Milhouse celebrate with lemonade. In Shelbyville, an old man makes up a story that the tree was haunted. This helps cover up the embarrassment of losing to Springfield. The Shelbyville kids end up drinking turnip juice, which they don't like at all!
How the Episode Was Made

"Lemon of Troy" was written by Brent Forrester. Jim Reardon directed the episode. When they were making the episode, the writers decided that Shelby, the leader of the Shelbyville kids, and his dad should look and act a bit like Bart and Homer.
Tress MacNeille voiced Shelby. Hank Azaria voiced Shelby's father. Hank Azaria based his voice on the actor Walter Matthau. This is interesting because Dan Castellaneta (who voices Homer) also based Homer's voice on Walter Matthau.
The animators wanted to show a beautiful, clean part of Springfield. They drew scenes where the kids run through clean streams and forests. In contrast, Shelbyville's nature was drawn to look darker and less inviting.
