Lenape, Kansas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lenape is a small community located in Leavenworth County, Kansas, in the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community" because it does not have its own local government, unlike a city or town.

Lenape's History

Lenape was founded a long time ago, in 1867. It was built along the main railway line of the Kansas Pacific Railroad. The community was named after the Lenape Native American people.

A post office was opened in Lenape in 1868. This office helped people send and receive mail for many years. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1943.

Lenape also played a small part in the history of other towns. For example, when the city of Abilene was being built, wood was brought from different places. Pine wood came from Hannibal, Missouri, and strong hardwood was brought all the way from Lenape, Kansas. This wood helped Abilene grow into a place that could handle many cattle.
