A Heroic Rescue
On January 13, 1982, a plane called Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the icy Potomac River in Washington, D.C.. Many people were watching as rescuers tried to help the passengers. One passenger, Priscilla Tirado, was too weak to grab a rescue line dropped from a helicopter.
Lenny Skutnik was one of the many people watching. Without thinking, he bravely dove into the freezing water. He swam to Priscilla and helped her get to the river bank, saving her life.
Honored by the President
Lenny Skutnik's bravery quickly became famous. U.S. President Ronald Reagan invited him to a very important event called the State of the Union address on January 26, 1982. This is a speech where the President talks about the country's plans.
Lenny sat next to First Lady Nancy Reagan. President Reagan praised Lenny, calling him an example of "the spirit of American heroism at its finest."
The "Lenny Skutniks"
Because of Lenny Skutnik's special recognition, something new started. Since 1982, other everyday heroes invited to sit with the First Lady during the President's speech are often called Lenny Skutniks. This tradition honors ordinary people who do extraordinary things.
Awards and Retirement
Lenny Skutnik received several important awards for his courage. These included the United States Coast Guard's Gold Lifesaving Medal and the Carnegie Hero Fund Medal. He also received many other tributes.
In 2010, Lenny retired from his job at the Congressional Budget Office. He had worked there as a printing and distribution assistant.
