When he was a teenager, Leonard moved to London. There, he became an apprentice. This meant he learned a trade by working for an experienced craftsman. He joined the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors. This group controlled the clothing business in London.

In May 1578, Leonard married Anne Wincoll. She was from Suffolk. They had three children together. Their names were Rowland, John, and Walter.

He also created gardens and walking paths there. The workers found this job so hard that they called difficult work "Holidaye worke."
