Early Life and Education
Joe Hooper grew up in South East London. He went to Alleyn's School for his early education. Later, he studied at Worcester College, Oxford, which is a famous university.
Working in Secret: World War II
In August 1938, Joe Hooper joined a secret group called the Government Code and Cypher School. This was just before World War II began. During the war, he worked at a super-secret place called Bletchley Park. At Bletchley Park, brilliant people worked together to break enemy codes. This work was very important for helping the Allies win the war.
Leading GCHQ
After the war, the Government Code and Cypher School became known as GCHQ. Joe Hooper continued to work there. He became the deputy director, which is like a second-in-command, for five years. Then, in January 1965, he became the director of GCHQ. He led this important agency until November 1973. As director, he was in charge of all the secret intelligence work done by GCHQ.
After GCHQ
After leaving GCHQ, Sir Joe Hooper took on another important role. In the mid-1970s, he became the Intelligence Co-ordinator in the Cabinet Office. In this job, he helped to oversee and connect all the different intelligence groups in the United Kingdom.
