Early Life and Education
Even though he grew up in a log cabin, Leonard was determined to get a good education. He studied civil engineering at Royal Roads Military College. This taught him how to design and build things. Later, he earned a degree in economics from Queen's University. This helped him understand how businesses and money work.
After finishing school, Leonard worked for the Canadian government for 16 years. He had different jobs, like mapping land as a surveyor. He also worked for the government in other countries and helped with industry in Canada.
Building Businesses
In 1978, Leonard decided to start his own company called Lee Valley Tools. It began as a small business that sold woodworking and gardening tools through mail order. This meant people could order tools from a catalog and have them sent to their homes. Lee Valley Tools grew into a very large and successful company.
Leonard didn't stop there! In 1985, he started another company called Veritas Tools. This company focused on making special tools for woodworking. Then, in 1991, he founded Algrove Publishing, which published books.
In 1998, Leonard's son, Robin, took over running Lee Valley Tools. This allowed Leonard to start a new and different kind of business. He created Canica Design, a company that made tools for doctors and surgeons. This company was located in Almonte, Ontario.
Awards and Recognition
Leonard Lee was recognized for his success and contributions. In 2002, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. This is one of the highest honors a Canadian citizen can receive. It's given to people who have made a big difference in Canada.
He also received special honorary degrees from two universities. In 2007, he got one from the Royal Military College of Canada. In 2011, he received another from the University of Ottawa. These degrees honored his achievements and his impact on business and innovation.
Leonard Lee passed away on July 7, 2016, after an illness. He is remembered as a visionary businessman who built lasting companies and contributed greatly to Canada.
