Leonard Pilkington facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Leonard Pilkington (1527–1599) was an English scholar and church leader. He had to leave England during the reign of Mary I of England because of his Protestant beliefs, a time known as the Marian exile. When Elizabeth I became queen, he returned and became a top professor of theology at Cambridge University. He also became the head of St John's College, Cambridge. Later, he followed in the footsteps of his brother, James Pilkington, who became an important bishop.

Early Life and Education

Leonard Pilkington was born in 1527 in a place called Rivington in Lancashire, England. He went to St John's College, Cambridge to study. In 1544, he earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).

He continued his studies at the same college. In 1546, he became a Fellow, which means he was a senior member of the college, often a teacher or researcher. He then earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in 1547.

Life in Exile

When Queen Mary I of England came to power, she was a strong Catholic. Leonard Pilkington, being a Protestant, lost his positions at the college. Because of this, he left England and lived in another country for a while. This period of leaving England for religious reasons was called the Marian exile. While he was living away from England, he got married.

Return to England and Leadership

After Queen Mary died, Elizabeth I became queen, and England became more Protestant again. Leonard Pilkington returned to England. Sadly, his wife had passed away. He was given back his position as a Fellow at St John's College.

In 1561, he became the Master of St John's College. This meant he was the main leader of the college. He took over from his brother, James. During his time as Master, he worked to change the college from its Catholic past to a more Protestant way of thinking, similar to the ideas from Geneva. He brought in new scholars, like William Fulke, to help with these changes.

After a few years, he decided to step down as Master. In 1567, he became a canon at Durham Cathedral. This was another important role in the church.
