Leonard Ware (born December 28, 1909 – died March 30, 1974) was an important American musician. He was one of the first jazz guitarists to play the electric guitar. This made him a pioneer in jazz music.

Ware's Musical Journey

Leonard Ware was born in Richmond, Virginia. He went to college at the Tuskegee Institute. There, he learned to play the oboe.

In 1938, Ware started playing the electric guitar. He recorded with famous jazz musician Sidney Bechet. Ware then formed a duo with Jimmy Shirley. This was one of the first groups to feature two electric guitarists.

During the 1940s, Ware performed in a trio. He also recorded his own music in 1947. He played with other great musicians. These included Don Byas, Albinia Jones, Buddy Johnson, and Big Joe Turner.

In December 1938, Ware played at Carnegie Hall. He performed with the Kansas City Six. This group included Lester Young and Buck Clayton. In 1939, he recorded "Umbrella Man" with Benny Goodman.

Ware also helped write popular songs. He co-wrote "Hold Tight" with Sidney Bechet. He also co-wrote "I Dreamt I Dwelt in Harlem". This song was recorded by Glenn Miller and The Delta Rhythm Boys in 1941. Ware stopped playing music a few years later. He passed away in 1974.
