Leone di Lernia (born April 18, 1938 – died February 28, 2017) was a famous Italian radio host, singer, and songwriter. He was known for his funny and silly music style. He became very popular in the early 1990s.

Leone was famous for making funny cover versions of dance songs. He would take a popular song and change the lyrics to be humorous or playful. For many years, from 1999 to 2016, he was a funny co-host on the radio show Lo Zoo di 105 on Radio 105 Network.

Who Was Leone di Lernia?

Leone di Lernia was born in Trani, a city in Italy. When he was 30 years old, he recorded his first song. It was called Trenta chili/Andiamo nei cieli.

After that, he moved to Milan. There, he worked a lot as a singer and comedian on local TV shows. In 1975, he released another song called Gaccia ad'avè/Spuosatiella Geuvè.

His Early Music Career

The song "Gaccia ad'avè" was a cover of "I Gotcha" by Joe Tex. Leone changed the lyrics to the Bari dialect, which is spoken in his home region. This was how he often made his music. He would take a popular English song and change the words to funny Italian or local dialect lyrics.

In the years that followed, Leone released several albums. Some were with his band, "Leone di Lernia and his new rock band." Others were just by himself. Most of these albums were released by a small record company called Duck Records. At first, his music was not very well known.

Becoming a National Star

In the 1990s, Leone di Lernia finally became famous across Italy. This happened when he joined a radio show called "Fausto Terenzi Show" on Radio Monte Carlo. He also released two albums in a series called Barhouse.

On these albums, he continued his style of making funny versions of popular dance songs. For example, he made "Ra ri ri ra ra ra, pesce fritto e baccalà" from "Gypsy Woman." He also made "Magnando" from "Bailando" and "Tu sei ignorante" from "Zombie." These funny songs helped him become a national star.

Radio Fun at 105 Network

In 1999, Leone started working on the radio show Lo Zoo di 105. This show was on Radio 105 Network. On the show, he would play his songs and also perform funny skits. Many of his funny sayings became popular catchphrases.

On April 3, 2008, he was briefly suspended from the show. But he was back on the air the very next day! After July 2008, he continued to appear on the show sometimes. He would fill in for others or join in the skits. His presence on Lo Zoo di 105 continued in new ways until 2016.

From December 2008 to December 2011, he also hosted another radio show called 105 Non Stop. Later, in May 2012, he hosted Leo D'Ylenia every Saturday.
