Leonor Ferrer Girabau was a very important Spanish woman. She was born in Barcelona, Spain, on July 1, 1874. Leonor became famous for being the first woman in Spain to work as a professional draftsperson. A draftsperson is someone who makes detailed technical drawings, like plans for buildings or machines. She passed away in Barcelona in 1953.

Leonor's Early Life and Education

Leonor Ferrer was a smart student. In 1897, she earned a teaching degree. This meant she could become a school teacher. But Leonor had another special talent: drawing.

Becoming the First Female Draftsperson

On March 13, 1905, Leonor achieved something amazing. She earned a special title: "expert draftsperson." This was given to her by a group called the Friends of the Country Economic Society. This made her the very first woman in Spain to get this degree.

She had already been working as a draftsperson for over six years. To get her degree, she studied many subjects. These included technical drawing, topographical drawing (making maps), geometry, and trigonometry. She studied these from 1902 to 1904.

Working at the Telephone Company

Between 1898 and 1931, Leonor worked for a telephone company. She started as a telephone operator. But in 1899, her drawing skills helped her get a new job. She became an assistant to the main draftsperson, Juan Marxuach.

Later, she became the head of the Plans Section. This meant she led a team of other workers. People at the time recognized her skill. They said her drawings were beautiful and that she did her job very seriously. This earned her a lot of trust and respect.

Teaching Drawing to Others

From the early 1900s, Leonor also started teaching drawing. She taught at the Institute of Culture and Popular Library of Women. This was a special place that helped educate and support women. It was started by Francesca Bonnemaison in 1909.

Later, Leonor opened her own school. It was called the Drawing Academy for Young Ladies. She ran this school from her home in Barcelona.

Later Career and Legacy

In 1931, Leonor left the telephone company. From 1936 to 1939, she worked as a school teacher in the Balearic Islands. She taught in places like Búger and Formentera. In the 1940s, she taught in Mercadal on the island of Menorca.

Leonor Ferrer was a member of the Spanish General Association of Draughtsmen. Today, you can find many of her works. They are kept at the Institute of Cartography and Geology of Catalonia. Her work shows how important she was in opening doors for women in technical fields.
