Leonor Izquierdo (born June 12, 1894 – died August 1, 1912) was the wife of the famous Spanish poet Antonio Machado. She was also a great source of inspiration for his poems.
Antonio Machado met Leonor when she was thirteen years old. At that time, he was working as a teacher in the city of Soria, Spain.
Early Life
Leonor Izquierdo was born in Almenar de Soria, Spain. Her father, Ceferino Izquierdo, was a sergeant in the Guardia Civil, which is a type of police force in Spain. Her mother was Isabel Cuevas.
Marriage to Antonio Machado
Antonio Machado and Leonor Izquierdo decided to get married. They had their wedding on July 30, 1909. The ceremony took place at the Church of Santa María la Mayor in Soria.
At the time of their marriage, Leonor was fifteen years old. This was quite young, as most women in Spain at that time usually married around the age of twenty-five.
Life in Paris and Illness
In 1911, Leonor and Antonio moved to Paris, France. Sadly, while they were there, Leonor became very ill. She was diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis, a serious lung disease.
Because of her illness, she had to return to Soria to rest and recover.
Later Life and Legacy
Leonor Izquierdo passed away on August 1, 1912, in Soria. She was only eighteen years old. She was buried in the Cementerio del Espino (Hawthorn Cemetery) in Soria.
Antonio Machado was deeply saddened by Leonor's death. He wrote many poems about her and the pain of losing her. After she died, he never returned to Soria.
Machado's friend once visited Leonor's grave. He placed a poem by Antonio Machado there, which showed how much Leonor meant to the poet.
