She passed away sometime after December 20, 1275.
Leonor's Family and Life
Leonor Rodríguez de Castro was born to Rodrigo Fernández de Castro and Leonor González de Lara. Her father, Rodrigo, was a powerful lord who owned lands like Cigales, Mucientes, and Santa Olalla.
Leonor was laid to rest in the Convent of San Felices de Amaya. This was a convent belonging to the Order of Calatrava, a group of knight-monks. Today, the convent is mostly in ruins in the province of Burgos, Spain. Her only son was also buried there.
Leonor's Marriage and Children
In 1269, Leonor married Philip of Castile. Philip was a very important person, being the brother of King Alfonso X. Philip died in 1274, just one year before Leonor.
Leonor and Philip had two children:
- Philip of Castile: He sadly passed away when he was still a child. He was buried next to his mother in the Convent of San Felices de Amaya.
- Beatriz Fernández of Castile: She lived until about 1340. Beatriz became a nun at the Abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas in Burgos. She often appeared in the official records of the Abbey. In 1321, another royal lady, Infanta Blanche of Portugal, left Beatriz 2000 maravedís in her will. A maravedí was a type of old Spanish coin. In 1295, Beatriz gave the village of San Cristobal del Monte to the council of Belorado. She stated that King Sancho IV had given her this village, and she proudly declared herself the daughter of Philip of Castile.
