Leptobrachium smithi is a cool little frog often called Smith's litter frog. It lives in the forests of Southeast Asia. This frog was named after Malcolm Arthur Smith, an early scientist who studied amphibians in Thailand.

What Smith's Litter Frog Looks Like

Smith's litter frog is a medium-sized frog. Male frogs are about 3.6 to 6.8 centimeters long. This measurement is from their snout (nose) to their vent (rear end). Female frogs are a bit bigger, measuring 5 to 7.8 centimeters.

They have a fairly large, flat head. Their eyes are very striking. The top half of their eye's iris (the colored part) is bright red or yellow. Their skin on top is mostly smooth. However, it has tiny bumps scattered around, especially near their rear. The skin underneath is also bumpy.

Where Smith's Litter Frog Lives

This frog was first discovered near Ton Nam Plu Waterfall. This waterfall is in Khao Chong, Trang Province, in southern Thailand. It is also found in nearby southern Myanmar and in Laos.

Scientists think it might also live in northeastern India and Bangladesh. It could also be found in Peninsular Malaysia, specifically on Pulau Langkawi. Before it was officially described, people sometimes confused it with other frog species.

Smith's litter frog is quite common in its local areas. It lives on the ground in evergreen forests. These are forests that stay green all year. It likes places with monsoon and rainforest climates. It also lives in dense mixed deciduous forests. Young frogs, called tadpoles, live in deep parts of forest streams. These streams usually have only a small current.
