Leroy was founded a long time ago, on December 11, 1875. The person who started this community was named Thomas McClann. A sign in Leroy, found at the crossing of U.S. 231 and Elkhart Street, tells us something important about its past. It says that Leroy was "One of Lake County's First Irish Settlements." This means that many of the first families who settled here came from Ireland.
