Leroy Jetta's Football Journey
Early Days and Junior Success
Leroy Jetta was a very talented young football player. He was chosen for the Under 18 All-Australian Team twice. This team features the best young players in the country. He also won the Kevin Sheehan Medal in 2004. This award goes to the best player in the Under 16 National Championships. Leroy was also part of the AIS-AFL Academy in 2005. This academy helps promising young athletes develop their skills.
Joining the Essendon Bombers
In 2006, Leroy was picked by the Essendon Bombers. This happened during the AFL Draft, where clubs choose new players. He was the 18th player chosen overall. He came from the South Fremantle Football Club. Leroy was known for his amazing speed and great kicking skills. He also had excellent vision on the field.
He played his first AFL game in 2007. This was in the first round of the season. He played three more games after that. However, a groin injury made him stop playing for the rest of 2007. He played for Essendon's VFL team, the Bendigo Bombers, while recovering.
Overcoming Challenges and Strong Comebacks
Leroy worked hard to get fit for the 2008 season. He was in excellent shape. He even matched a club record for the 20-meter sprint. His fitness helped him play well in the NAB Cup. This led to him being chosen for Essendon's first game of 2008. He played well, getting 13 possessions and making great tackles.
However, a hamstring injury stopped him again in Round 3. He returned to play in Round 7. After a short dip in his form, his coach, Matthew Knights, kept him in the team. Leroy then had a fantastic game against Fremantle in Round 14.
The 2009 season was also important for Leroy. He didn't play in the first two games. But his strong performances for the Bendigo Bombers helped him get back into the Essendon team for Round 3.
Leaving Essendon and Later Career
Leroy Jetta left the Essendon Football Club on 7 September 2014. He had played with the club for eight seasons.
In 2016, Leroy and 33 other Essendon players faced a suspension. This was because of a sports supplements program from 2012. They were found to have used a banned substance. Leroy was suspended for two years. However, because of how the suspension was backdated, he served about 17 months. This meant he missed the entire 2016 WAFL season. He also missed parts of the 2015/16 and 2016/17 NTFL seasons.
After his time with Essendon, Leroy continued to play football. He played for Peel Thunder in the WAFL. He also played for Pinjarra in the WA Amateur Football League in 2018.
