About the Church
This church is an important part of the community in Shetland. It helps people come together for worship and other activities.
Places of Worship
The Lerwick and Bressay Parish Church has three main places where people meet for services:
- Gulberwick Church: This church is about 4 kilometers south of Lerwick. It holds a Sunday service at 10:00 AM.
- St Columba's Church: Located right in the center of Lerwick, this church has a Sunday service at 11:15 AM. The building was updated and made new in 2008.
- Bressay Church: This church is on the island of Bressay. During the summer months, Sunday services are at 6:30 PM. In the colder months, from November to April, services are held at 3:00 PM.
St Columba's Building
St Columba's Church is the only Church of Scotland parish church in Lerwick today. This large building was built a long time ago, in the late 1820s. It is the biggest church building in all of Shetland and is considered a special historic building.
An organ was put into the church in 1871. This was quite new for the Church of Scotland at the time. It was only the second church building in the Church of Scotland to have an organ. This happened after the church rules changed in 1866, allowing musical instruments to be used during worship.
Church Ministers
As of 2014, the minister for the church was Caroline Lockerbie. Before her, Gordon Oliver was the minister from 2002 to 2010. He had previously served at St Andrew's Church, Lisbon and later moved to the Parish of Latheron in Caithness in 2010.
