Leslie Lazarowitz (born October 2, 1941 – died January 6, 2017) was an American sound engineer. A sound engineer is a person who works with the technical side of sound. They make sure the sound in movies, music, or live shows is clear and balanced.
Les Lazarowitz was very good at his job. He was nominated for two Academy Awards for Raging Bull and Tootsie. These awards are also known as the Oscars. He was nominated for "Best Sound" for these films. In 1979, he also received a BAFTA nomination for Saturday Night Fever. BAFTA is a British award for film and television. Lazarowitz passed away in Florida at the age of 75.
Early Life and Starting Out
Leslie Lazarowitz was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. This was on October 2, 1941. He went to college at Brooklyn College.
In the early 1960s, he started working as a photographer's assistant. Soon after, he began working at a TV studio. There, he learned many different jobs, including editing. This helped him learn about how films and TV shows are made.
A Career in Sound
Throughout his career, Les Lazarowitz became a top production sound mixer. A production sound mixer is in charge of all the sound recorded during filming. This includes dialogue, sound effects, and background noise. They make sure everything sounds perfect on set.
He worked on many famous movies until he retired in the late 1990s. He worked with well-known directors. These include Martin Scorsese, Sidney Pollack, and Mike Nichols. His first film credit was Midnight Cowboy in 1969. He continued working on films until Don't Drink the Water in 1994.
