Leslie Haliburton Ashmore was a brave officer in the British Royal Navy. He was born on February 21, 1893, and passed away on January 10, 1974. He rose to the high rank of Vice Admiral. After the Second World War, he was in charge of the Royal Navy's Reserve Fleet.
Leslie Ashmore joined the Royal Navy when he was just 13 years old in 1906. He worked hard and became a Lieutenant in 1915, during the First World War.
Before the Second World War began, in 1938, he became the leader of a warship called Kent. In 1940, he started helping a very important naval leader called the Second Sea Lord.
During the Second World War, he commanded two large battleships. He was the leader of Valiant in 1942. Then, in 1943, he took command of another battleship, Malaya.
After the war ended in 1945, he became the Flag Officer commanding the Reserve Fleet. This meant he was in charge of all the ships that were kept ready for future use. He retired from the Navy in 1947. He lived to be 80 years old.
His Family
Leslie Ashmore was married to Tamara Vasilevna Schutt. They had two sons who also became very important in the Royal Navy.
One son, Sir Edward Ashmore, became an admiral of the fleet. This is the highest rank in the Royal Navy. He also became the Chief of the Defence Staff, which means he was the top military advisor for the entire United Kingdom.
His other son, Sir Peter Ashmore, also became a Vice Admiral. He had a special job working for the Queen. From 1973 to 1986, he was the Master of the Household to Her Majesty the Queen. This role involved managing the Queen's official residences and staff.
