The Lestoideidae are a small family of damselflies. These interesting insects live in Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and Australia. There are only two main groups, called genera, and nine different types, or species, in this family.

What are Lestoideidae?

Lestoideidae is the scientific name for this family of damselflies. For a long time, scientists thought this family had only one group, or genus, called Lestoidea.

However, over the last 20 years, new studies have shown that another genus, Diphlebia, also belongs to the Lestoideidae family. This means the family is now bigger than once thought.

The Genera of Lestoideidae

Today, the Lestoideidae family includes these two genera:

It's important to know that the genus Lestoidea is different from the larger group called the Lestoidea superfamily. Even though they sound the same, the superfamily is named after a different genus called Lestes.
