Discovering Levant Cave
Levant Cave was found in a very interesting way, similar to how Lower St. Michael's Cave was discovered. Both caves were uncovered during military digging projects. For Levant Cave, a group of army engineers called the Royal Engineers were digging tunnels. They were building a secret command center for a very large gun, a 9.2-inch gun, at a place called Levant Battery.
How Tunnelling Revealed the Cave
As the Royal Engineers dug their tunnels, they accidentally broke into Levant Cave. This digging caused some damage to the cave's natural structure. However, even with the damage, many beautiful rock formations inside the cave still remain. These formations show the cave's natural beauty.
What Makes Levant Cave Special?
Levant Cave is part of a group known as the "Levant series of caves." This group also includes George's Bottom Cave and Gibbon's Cave. Being part of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve means the cave is in a protected area. This area is known for its amazing wildlife and natural beauty.
Unique Features of the Cave
Even though the cave was disturbed by military work, it still holds special features. The remaining formations are a testament to the cave's original beauty. Caves like Levant Cave offer a glimpse into Gibraltar's geological past. They also show how human activities can sometimes uncover hidden natural wonders.
